Sepsis is a medical emergency. If you suspect sepsis, seek emergency care immediately. This page is educational only and is not a substitute for emergency or clinical care.

For people living with Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), sepsis is a critical medical risk that requires vigilance. Because SBS changes digestion and often involves devices such as central lines, understanding why sepsis happens โ€” and how to recover โ€” matters for long-term health.

EDUCATION
Why sepsis risk is higher in SBS

Sepsis is the bodyโ€™s extreme, life-threatening response to an infection. In SBS, risk can be elevated for several reasons:

๐Ÿฆ

Bacterial overgrowth

Shorter intestine can disrupt normal balance and allow overgrowth that may contribute to infection reaching the bloodstream.

๐Ÿ’‰

Central line infections

Parenteral nutrition through a central venous catheter can create a pathway for catheter-related bloodstream infection (CLABSI).

๐Ÿฉบ

Intestinal complications

Severe structural problems can allow gut bacteria to reach the abdominal cavity or bloodstream.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Weakened defenses

Malabsorption and nutrient gaps can reduce the bodyโ€™s ability to fight infection, so issues can escalate faster.

Best defense: Work closely with your care team. Prompt identification and treatment of any infection are crucial to reducing the risk of progression to sepsis.

RECOVERY
Why post-sepsis support matters

Surviving a septic episode is only the first step. Sepsis can take a major toll on body and mind. Support after an episode helps recovery in several ways:

๐Ÿ’ช

Physical recovery

Strength, muscle, daily function

๐Ÿง

Emotional well-being

Anxiety, depression, PTSD support

๐Ÿ“‹

Follow-up care

Meds, appointments, fragile recovery

๐Ÿ”

Prevent recurrence

Line-care protocols with your team
